I was reading Enjoying God by SJ Hill, and in it, the author writes about why purity matters to God in a way I’ve never heard before. It all centers on how we, as believers, are the Bride of Christ, purchased for Himself by His own blood.
When He sees His bride giving her heart to things that could cause harm, He immediately becomes jealous for her safety
I’d heard that God was jealous for me. I’d heard He was protective. And I’d heard that His love was amazing. But not like this.
The reason that God calls you to a higher standard is because it hurts Him to see you surrendered to lust and impurity. He knows it’s not good for you, and will only lead to heartache, and Christ wants your heart unbroken, and totally His.
When you delve into the world of internet pornography, even the first time, imagine the tears your Bridegroom cries, because He knows it’s going to kill your soul. When you lay in bed at night, replaying your past mistakes in your head, imagine what that does to God. How do you think He feels when He sees you and your boyfriend/girlfriend moving your line further and further back until you cross it? What about when you sing songs filled with trash instead of the love songs you’ve hidden away for Him?
Friends, God loves you with a love that is intense and exclusive. He is heartbroken when He sees you making choices that He knows will hurt you, His bride. He knows you long to be known, and to know Him. Jesus made a marriage vow on the cross that says He will honor, love, cherish and protect you, forever, and always.
But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, evenwhen we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ— by grace you have been saved Ephesians 2:4-5
